This week I was able to visit a wonderful new restaurant in Tallahassee called the Paisley Café. Opening early last week, the Paisley café is located directly behind “Lucy and Leo’s Cupcakery”. This place is like a love letter to why I love the restaurant business and the foodie scene. The owner used to work for a bank in Tallahassee. After years of putting in her time, she decided to follow her passion and open the restaurant she always wanted. The story (and food) would fit right at home on Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.
The premise? A café serving breakfast and lunch, most of which is made from scratch food. The ingredients that aren’t made from scratch (such as the bread) are imported fresh from places that make a quality product. The menu changes based on what’s fresh as well. The place goes as far as to only serve coke made with real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup.
I would describe the look of the restaurant as modern cafe chic (if that’s not a real term I am making it one). Bright baby blue walls surround the restaurant. The place is long but not very wide. It’s also small enough that you might need to get your food to go. It was packed while I was there. The Cupcakery utilizes the first part of the place to bake their cupcakes so it will be the first thing you smell when you enter.
The staff was extremely friendly, especially the owner. She has a way of making you feel like your home. I would like to note that some of the wait times on the food were long; however, they had been open for less than a week when I visited. This is to be expected of any new restaurant.
The food was excellent. On this day, there was a choice of a few different sandwiches, chili, soup, and many desserts. I opted for the bison chili, corn muffin, and a chicken salad sandwich on a croissant. The croissant was flaky and buttery. It was pressed to provide a little extra texture to the sandwich. The chicken salad full of depth. You could taste each component individually yet its combination of flavors as well. It was the kind of chicken salad you knew was made in-house. It was topped with some salami, giving it that little extra. The corn muffin was soft on the inside and firm on the outside. It was well flavored. The chili was extremely hearty. You got a nice bite of bison in every bite. The other elements of the chili were just as prominent. If I had any complaint about the food, the chili could have just a touch more seasoning (salt specifically).
I did not have any desert this day, but I would like to note that had 3 different pies, an Oreo Ghirardelli brownie, and various other treats that smelt delicious.
Overall, this place screams “passion for food”. I look forward to going back.
By the way, If you really like something on the menu or if there is something you want them to make, the have a requests wall for future menus…
